Convert to SQL Server

Overview

• Using an SQL database as the SEOM store data file the MS Access or SQL database that contains the users order information and program preferences. It does not contain Reports, which are housed in the Monsoon OMS program file (MS Access database). is an Enterprise Edition feature.

• The SQL Server Setup screen synonymous with the Microsoft Access Form object or graphical user interface (GUI) is accessed by going to the Main Menu > Settings > Data Functions > Convert to SQL Server.

• When  SEOM is first installed, a Microsoft Access database is created as the store data file. As the business grows and there are more daily orders and more users of the program, it is beneficial to convert the store data file to an SQL database.

• Before doing so, additional software must be installed on the machine where the SQL data file will reside.

• SQL Server 2008 R2, any edition including Express, is supported.  Server requirements vary depending on which edition of SQL Server you install.  Please refer to Microsoft's system requirements for your edition, which can be viewed by selecting the appropriate link at the SQL Server 2008 R2 download site.    

• The benefits of using SQL Server are:

• • Better data integrity, more stable platform

  • Larger database capacity (Not limited to 2GB file size as is Microsoft Access)

  • Automated backup capability (not available with SQL Express) and other database management tools

Description of the Screen

Create a New System DSN (Data Source Name)

Name for new System DSN Field

• enter the name for the new DSN Data Source Name - associates a specific SQL Server, driver, and database together in a connection string used to access the data. to be created

Name of SQL Server Field

• enter the name of the instance of SQL Server with which it is associated

Name of SQL Database Field

• enter the name of the SQL database to become the SEOM store data file

Use "trusted connection" Check Box

• check this box if you are using Windows authentication to validate your access to the instance of SQL Server
• mutually exclusive with the User ID and Password fields which are needed when SQL Server manages connections to the database

User ID Field

• enter the User ID to access the server and database if SQL Server is used to manage connections to the database
• this field is inactive if Use 'trusted connection" is selected

Password Field

• enter the Password associated with the User ID  
• this field is inactive if Use 'trusted connection" is selected

Continue Button

• select this when all applicable information is entered in the fields in this section to create the DSN

Use an Existing DSN

Show Radio Buttons

• select to "left-click" the mouse on an object, usually a row in a table, in the context of Monsoon OMS documentation which kind of existing DSNs are displayed in the list below

System DSNs

• any user who logs on to a computer that has permission to access the data source can use a System DSN
• System DSNs are stored in the Windows registry making them slightly faster than a File DSN

File DSNs

• the .dsn file contains all the information required to connect to the data source
• note that you must install the ODBC driver locally to use a File DSN
• File DSNs are not stored in the Windows registry. The .dsn file is a text file that you can view in any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad.

List of Selected DSN Types

• this refers to the area directly below the Show radio buttons
• select an existing DSN to access the SQL database

Continue Button

• select this to associate the new SQL store data file with the selected DSN

Network location for shared files (email templates, CustomReports.mdb, etc.)

• specify the location where the store data file and other shared SEOM files reside

Folder Icon

• used to navigate to the location of the shared SEOM files
