Unrecognized Payment Method

Background

 

The user may see the error message "unrecognized payment method" upon importing orders where some type of transaction was performed at the website. This article is applicable to the following shopping carts: Miva Merchant, AbleCommerce and MonsterCommerce.

 

 

Cause

 

Typically, this error is generated because the Order Manager's web script is unable to determine the payment method used on the order. If it is a credit card payment, the likely cause is that the shopping cart is not storing the entire card number. Most shopping cart payment processing systems do not pass the "card type" (i.e. Visa, MasterCard, etc)used in a transaction. Consequently, the Order Manager script must determine the card type from the credit card number. If the full number is not present it cannot determine the card type.

 

 

Solution

 

Set up the credit card gateway configuration on the website to store the entire credit card number.

 

Note: If you use a non-standard payment method like "COD", "Net30" or "Net60", make sure the name is listed in the Order Manager's Payment Methods list (Main Menu>Maintenance Menu>Maintenance tab>Payment Methods button). If the payment method is not listed, add it exactly the way it is reported by the shopping cart in the order download text file. Adding the new payment method will not fix existing orders but should properly identify the payment method on newly imported orders.
